also talk about shit like the development of lyrics in Melodic death metal. Traditional death metal is often much more violent themed (i'm not saying always, dont ride me for it). Melodic death metal lyrics deal with things like social/cultural problems (often advocating change (ie: Reroute to Remain by In Flames), lost love (Change of Hearts by Insomnium), emotional problems (tooo many examples) etc.

talk about how many artists (especially in scandinavia) wanted to veer away from the typical amelodic sound of traditional death metal. A lot of those guys were heavily influenced by earlier 80's metal acts (sabbath, maiden, etc.) and even classical music (hey, randy rhoads was a classical music student), and probs other genres too. MDM (melodic death metal) then evolved, becoming much more melodic with a much more approachable/melodic sound. Pioneers were bands like DT, ATG, IF,etc
