to be more exact emgs then now i think its seymour duncan blackouts which are great for heavy distortion

they are amazing for alternative punk pop and indie, but it all depends on how you wanna sound. as far as metal, if your gonna have a whole crapload of distortion, its gonna minimize the difference between the single coil and humbucker sound. but like suckit mentioned, alot of metal guys use it. like the slipknot rythm guitarist, he uses a fricking telecaster

you can use them for a lot, but for punk and metal, itd be good for you to get a gibson

strats are good for metal, used by iron maiden, yngwie malmsteen uses them. and like every punk/pop/indie band uses them, like blink 182 etc |
