yeah, even though richard refuses to claim he's the best guitarist in the world, as you can see in this clip, he's probably one of them, but still playing his own music, wearing his own beard, and exerting tremulous dry humor in fistfulls along the way...

See, this always gets me so cross, and forgive me, but Richard is a great singer, and pretty good looking, mostly with the beard. He is a true musician, and I would say that music is his career, not a bookstore cashier. I mean, he often puts in eight hours a day to write and rehearse, like normal working hours. He plays guitar like nobody's business, which as a player myself, I know takes HOURS and YEARS of practice. Once you have put that much time into something, you can't rid yourself of it.

Probably several reasons. Unlike Clapton, etc, his first band was basically unknown here. He's not handsome; his folksy style can seem a bit esoteric to pop listeners. By his own admission he's not a great singer - though he's improved tremendously over the years. Plus, music hasn't been the only thing in his life; he actually quit touring and recording for awhile and worked in a bookstore. In any case he is becoming pretty well known here now - just happening a bit late, that's all.

I actually asked him that question one night after a performance. He said it was about no one in particular. I followed up with the "some names were mentioned in the press" line, mentioning Dylan, etc. He laughed and said no, it was just a song about a fictional character.

Saw RT with Patty Griffin last year. He ripped that show up. Good stuff. |
