Greece by Naadohdi

We find Greece exciting and enjoyed their history, weather and food. Our trip was mainly to visit the historic places around Peloponnese and found time to stay in the island of Hydra as well.We landed in Athens and like any other big city it is full of people and problems. Acropolis is grand, the pentelic marbles of 400BC are still shining and the goddess Nike Apterus is still standing tall. From the Piraeus port we took the flying dolphin, the high speed yacht to Saronic island of Hydra. The island has a horse shoe shaped marina and it seems to be the heart of all activities. The motor vehicles are prohibited here, and hilly terrain with stone steps makes it difficult to ride even a bicycle, so for those physically challenged the donkeys are the only way of commuting. It is common to see people walking and their donkeys following them carrying what ever they have purchased.We took another flying dolphin to the island of Poros, and caught a bus ride to Epidavros to see the theatre built in 4BC. The main attraction here is the acoustics, all 15000 spectators can hear even a mild voice from the center of the theatre as it was designed for natural acoustics. The temple to the god of medicine Asclepios is here and in the olden days people flock here for medical treatments. The surgical instruments used in early BC are in display in the museum. The Epidarvan games predate the ones in Olympia and the track where nude men supposed to have run the first 50meter sprint is still preserved. From Epidavros we took another bus to Nafplion but missed our bus connection to Mycenae, and hence ended up staying there overnight. This Greek capitol of 1800s is a nice little town with a number of eateries overlooking the Venetian built castle of bourtzi in Argolic bay. If you have the energy, hiking the Nafplion hill to the fortress of palamidi may be a good idea, but we simply took a cab up the hill to have an aerial view of the area. We passed a number of orange orchards and reached Mycenae, and were a little disappointed, perhaps our expectation was too much. We came to Greece mainly to visit the Mycenae where the civilization started in 2000BC. What is left today is the foundation of buildings, burial grounds and short rock walls. A lot of imagination is required to appreciate an archeological site such as this. The near by museum is awesome though, it has artifacts from those ages including the mask of Agamemnon, jewellary and a large collection of pottery. We said goodbye to Greece, knowing very well that we will be here again soon.
