I don't understand how anyone could watch this more than once, I barely even got through that. It just drags on showing you nothing... It really is incredibly over hyped.

I don't think it's absolutely necessary to read the books to understand what's going on. Watch it a couple times and you'll start to get it. I do wish Kubrick had been a bit more clear in this, but it's usually his artistic nature to be ambiguous.

The monolith actually opened up a portal for Dave to the place where the higher beings take alien civilizations to be converted into a higher form of life. It's really quite an amazing story, you should read the books. Clarke is a fucking genius.
