Still relatively new to movies ("Topper" was in '37; "To Have and Have Not" wouldn't be filmed till '44), Hoagy is slightly uncomfortable but game here, as he introduces Jack Teagarden's first big band (trumpeter Charlie Spivak solos on "Stardust"; future Glenn Miller reedman Ernie Caceres is also present). The short features several of Hoagy's best known songs, sung by Hoagy, Big Tea or Meredith Blake, one of the better but underrated big band "girl singers."

Great piece of swing-band history! JT while famous was somewhat obscured by the great TD. The musicians in the band were fabulous and, even though I hate labels, I would call this swing rather than jazz, considering what Basie and Ellington were doing at the same time. The film stereotyping of African Americans in this period is record, but this film is embarrassing beyond the pale. Still, a fun look at the past and some fab swing sounds abound.

So was the Magna Carta and habeus corpus. Your point?

How can you get any better than that? Stardust is one of the best melodies ever written, and Jack's band swings it beautifully. I think Meridith Blake was under rated too.
