If you can find it, search for Dmitri Mitropoulos conducting the New York Philharmonic in a live concert from the early 1950s; their realization of this movement is seared into my soul forever, and it's as if they're composing it on the spot. They play with such passion and total commitment, as if their lives depended on it. We don't hear music making like that anymore. :-(

I felt like I had a spiritual awakening when I heard this. It is a deeply profound and sincere prayer.

I remember the first time I heard this movement. The opening bars made me sit down and listen! At 6.13 the new theme really started to grab me and when it resolved at 6.31 to 7.06 I could have quite happily sat and cried, it was the most beautiful piece of music I ever heard. Seeing the orchestra swaying from 6.31 onwards is just gorgeous. A beautiful performance of an absolutely awesome movement.

Probably the only Symphony I can think of that matches the breadth, scope and emotional intensity of a Mahler Symphony.I love this Symphony. I have the Previn on Telarc from many years back. Also love Rachmaninoff's solo piano works.Especially the Variations.

Me too - esp. the clarinet solo and the development section at around 6.48.

Something happened here! I am not so sure that it was music, at least on Previn's part. I think the orchestra was professional enough to ignore him. I was in Houston,TX when he took over there. He and Mia Farrow went skinny dipping in the Warwick Hotel fountains, supposedly after taking LSD.Maybe he is still having flashbacks. SAD!I never understood what the women saw in him. Or why he couldn't stay married. He looks so ANCIENT here! |
