He is talking about instinct... This instict to survive and replicate as a basis for human behaviour. He is not saying it's entirely consious, he is just saying that it is the driving force in all of us - whether or not we relalise it all the time or not.

That's not the point. What he means is that genetically we are programmed to replicate. Social dynamics has changed too quickly for our psyche to adapt so we're to some degree outdated machines. He's just trying to get us to upgrade to the current social structures
