Actually, the Santa Clara Vanguard, a drum and bugle corps, did this in 87'. It was beautiful.

Most orchestras call on the principals to perform solos.

If you think that's bad, you should know that my marching band did adagio for strings. It sucked.

People outside of the marching band circuit don't realize that great music can be successfully adapted for good marching bands. Following drum corps' tradition, high school bands can play represent wonderful music to an audience that otherwise would never hear it. My band played parts of The Kalandar Prince (from Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov) as our closer last year- it was great for everyone.

I rememember reading somewhere that Mussorgsky had inquired of Rimsky-Korsakov if he would orchestrate this but Rimsky-Korskakov had been ill,(and a bit old), some others had been approached, Balikirev, among others and the competition was so fierce it never was assigned, Ravel scooped it up years later.
