According to some sources, he made that turn because there was another aircraft on the runway. After asking for permission to make a left turn which was granted from the tower, he made it, but there was a restricted airspace (nuclear storage facility, they say) which he did not want to fly into and thus tied to make the turn quicker. "McGeehan attempted to eject...." it was too late and happened too quick.Hope nothing like that happens again. Too bad for the guys who have died, fuck the plane.

for whoever is wondering about the crash, it was caused by a drastic and sudden loss of lift. when you bank a plane until it is nearly sideways, particularly a large plane with a thin fuselage incapable of generating its own lift, the plane will stall out because there is simply not enough lifting force to keep it in the air.

There have been ejection seats in every model of B-52 ever produced. A crash axe is not used as the primary escape procedure and the crews do not joke about the procedures. Not sure where you get your info.
