The inspection machine uses a 4 or 6 camera setup to do a complete inspection of a chip component, capacitor or resistor in one pass. Masakazu Matsuo, Leader, System Engineer Div.: "The chips are fed into the machine from the parts feeder and then lined up ready for the next stage. The rotating vertical disc here then takes the chips and processes them through to the horizontal rotating disc, the chips are then fed out of the machine. During this process, there are three image processing devices connected to the vertical disc and another three connected to the horizontal disc, these inspect the external surfaces of the chips. The images captured are then displayed here. For each stage, the system switches between two light sources, which lets us make a very accurate and intricate inspection of the chips." Using a monochrome 2-dimensional CCD camera, the system can inspect units for up to 10 different items including external dimensions, dirt or surface flaws and colour inspection is also an option. It can also store up to 50 images of different types of chips for inspection and analysis. The images captured are then displayed here. The system is controlled using a touch panel, the display can be set to either Japanese or English and the software can be customized to support any type of workpieces. All inspection data processed by the cameras can be statistically analyzed and the data saved to a disk for subsequent analysis, processing and storage.
