I agree. This doesn't exactly make me want to run out and see the show.

I'm iffy on the choice of song. I'd rather see "Life is Happiness Indeed" or "Best of All Possible World."

OMG I just realized who that is. That's Jim Dale! He was the bad guy in Pete's Dragon.

You can rent it on Netflix, or purchase it from Amazon. Look for Candide (2005)

This story is so complex and Bernstein's music is so amazing and massive, I'm not sure the Broadway stage...even the expansive Gershwin stage, can do it justice. To see it in all of it its majesty and splendor, get your hands on a copy of the Jerry Hadley (RIP) and Dame June Anderson performance conducted by the composer himself, Mastro Leonard Bernstein. It is truly amazing and to watch Bernstein conduct his unruly child of a composition that fought its own birth for decades...breathtaking.

I was just about to say the same thing! The lyrics are very Gilbert, the melody very Sullivan, but the playful rhythms and time signatures (especially around 2:10ish) is all Bernstein!

It's by the wonderful Leonard Bernstein.

They made a lot of cuts for this performance. In the show, that governor deceives Candide by giving him a "perfect wreck of a boat" |
