Rather drastic to call 4.Bxc6 dxc6 5.Nxe5 a "fatal" error. Black is just slightly better in the resulting ending.

Edit - I stand corrected, he changed it to William later (teach me to try and be clever lol)

Nice analysis, but it's Wilhelm Steinitz not William! lol

i like bishops! bishops are my favourite pieces and i value them more than knights. but everyone i know says that bishop pairs are only useful in an endgame is that true?

Had White slid the Bishop to c7 Black would have penetrated and won quickly with Rd2+. Bc7 would have lost.
robertscherer73 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
umm, englich would have decided the game at 7:23 in to the video.........instead of trading bishops, he could have slid his bishop over to c7 and eventually picked the b6 pawn off..........the game would have been over with

No argument there. Steinitz was amazing - the first person to have a firm grasp on the concept of positional play.
Kaizen63 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Yeah, sorry, I confused him with someone else. I kinda caught that after posting it. Steinitz had a lot of competition of course. He's rated in the top ten grandmasters of all time list.
thrajin (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Steinitz was not a contemporary of Botvinnik or Tal.
