Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-25 was basically started as a Soviet Programme to Counter the USAF's XB-70 Valkyrie bomber (sustained flight at Mach 3.0). The MiG-25 has speed upto Mach 3.2 (some suggest even higer) and it holds the Highest Altitude record of an aircraft, 107,000feet (an uncontrolled ballistic trajectory). Although its intercepting capability was seldom used, it still turned out to be a powerful reconaissance platform (Like the USAF's SR-71 Blackbird)

The mig-25 was never intended as a Fighter. It was designed as a standoff interceptor focusing on speed, climb rate, and long range engagement with four active radar homing R-40R, or infrared-homing (R-40T) air-to-air missiles. |
