I trained quite a few times with Sensei. Good memories.....sometimes painful. But that was the spirit of Shotokan. Sensei Kawazoe came to teach here in 75 I think and then there was Sensei Hideo Tomita who graded me Shodan in Scotland. Great memories. Oss.

He graded me up to 2nd Kyu, around 1997. I must say though, although I had a great respect for him, I wasn't intimidated. In my opinion, that was his style, sort of like a father/uncle figure, with a calm serenity. Almost as if he didn't need to intimidate - he had nothing to prove.Actually, Sensei Ohta was more intimidating if you ask me. He was scary, knew how to tell you off if your technique was off.That said, I didn't train there regularly, so maybe others had different experiences.

He graded me at Marshall Street to purple belt (I think) back in around 1993-4. He was one intimidating man. However, winning the Southern Regions competition in 1995 (London Uni) beating Marshall Street along the way remains one of my greatest sporting achievements.

When you were born Andy Sherry was 5th dan.I first encountered him when he was 6th dan. He taught Frank Brennan and Jimmy Brennan Senseis. Excellent karateka and nice characters, as karate teaches one to be. Are you?
