The cat can just flat out play.

Thanks for this vid. I love Bruninghaus's playing and writing - I wish he'd made more albums of his own music. I guess the Garbarek tours make for an easy life and pay well.

'cause i think it's ok to be critical. this guy can play piano, no doubt, but for me it's not inspired, and, beside that, negative vibes are a musical element...part of the system, i'm sorry(-;

See, I don't get what you are saying, I hear something else to what you hear it seems. Theres more than pentatonics (which is a kind of catch all phrase), theres a lot of outside scales, diminished, harmonic minor, chromaticism, freeish elements, lot of hand independence.... Also, don't you think you are being a bit patronising to people who like this music "always people impressed"... Just move on and listen to stuff you like.. theres plenty of music here.. why spread negative vibes?
mantiswilm (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
it's actually not about comparing. he creats so little ideas, just combaning semi-professional technical skills with pop-like phrases. pentatonic fooling around, few thrills, so what the heck!? if you show a serious face doing it, some people will always be impressed, i wouldn't give a phrase of evans for that...

maybe thats the point hes not trying to emulate the "great american traditiion" (which I think is a bit of a ball and chain) and is doing his own thing... I think its beautiful, many people do... Its a shame music has turned into a X is better than Y.. its s a product of the modern age... like everything has to quantified with bar charts and analysis... just enjoy, don't think too much about comparing...
mantiswilm (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
...it's a modern kind of czerny...far away of the idea of jazz...powell, monk or jones creat more ideas in less then 2 bars...
orangefunk (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Yep.. hes probably the best hardly known pianist in the whole history of modern jazz piano... just immense skills... his own albums are wonderful... why doesn't ECM give the space to do another one?

you are the best in the history of piano...ketelias |
