Che favolosi cantanti!

the final number (per ultima volta) has the strength of very clear diction but lacks the shear voltage of the Scotto/Corelli version, or the 1983 Arena di Verona versions

To be honest, Björling still misspronounces the g in 'piangere' here. But the combination of the alveolar fricative and plosive just is something Swedes often struggle with, just ask them to say "James". ;-)Anyway, Björling's Italian isalmost better than Pavarotti's Neapoletan, and his French is definitely better than that of any Italian singer I've ever heard attempting the cross-over...

Pfft, have the italians sing in swedish & see how their intonation would sound (i doubt they can even memorize the lines let alone think about intonation...). Jussi sings sublimely in 6 languages & he pays enormous attn to the text, not to mention his extraordinary level of nuance... cont

i read his italian diction is so right on that w/eyes closed u swear he was an italian. i even had a german listen to Bjorling sing Standchen & he couldn't tell Jussi wasn't a native german. Besides i love his own unique style of diction. It's all his own and it's absolutely delicious like his divinely gorgeous voice.

I agree, and I hit the wrong dang button. Meant to hit the thumbs up. This is wonderful. I wore out the first recording of them doing Turandot and have worn out the second, both vinyl. So sorry. It should be an up thumb. My bad.

This is the first I've heard this recording. It is fabulous; gives me goosebumps. I cantell that Pavarotti listened to this maestrowhen growing up; however, in my humble opinion, Pavarotti's intonation was better than Bjoerling's. This may be due to the easeof recording and listening to one's own voice, and recognizing what can be worked on.Anway, thank you for this posting.

His voice was not a large one but in the Bergonzi, Peerce, Pavoratti lyric mold size wise, I heard him and them live and Pav. sang Calaf live but not to great success, Jussi was smarter, did not bother live with it but could have sure but it would not be his best role in a big house. STILL HIS RECORDING IS MY FRAVORITE OF IT WITH A DREAM CAST. |
