knowldege is more important than equipment, I normally carry a firesteel ( zirconium rod) and matches as a back up and If required I can reliably start a fire with the bowdrill , we show the old ways because they are interesting and this enriches our experience of the wilds and the resources available. You could use a lighter but they also have drawbacks, if they get wet or if it s too cold the gas will not gasify (happened to me loads of times). Each to their own.Nomad

They're neat gadgets, but if you're going to go to the trouble of carrying a "kit", why not just use a lighter? In the old days if they would have had access to a bic lighter they would've used that instead. In a survival, or real camping situation (not just renting a cabin at the KOA) you should travel as light as possible. For the room and weight these kits take up, not to mention the time they take to use, you could carry 3 or 4 bic lighters stored in different areas in case you lose one.

common sense must prevail guys, survival is all about knowing what to do to survive,it will change due to your circumstances, one says fire first, one says shelter first,it all depends on the climate your in,and it even changes then depending on your situation and weather conditions.cold but no snow, cold with snow,,hot and wet,hot and dry and too many others to mention here, all with different priorities, what are you fighting about?survival is about learning from others and your enviroment.

WHAT AN ASSININE STATEMENT, NEWWBY. MORE SCENARIO ASSUMPTIONS? BTW WHO DO YOU IMPRESS WITH MAKING PERSONAL INSULTS? NO ROCKET SCIENCE. I SAID IT'S COMMON SENSE. I NEVER SAID BUILD A FIRE ON AN ICE FLOW OR IN THE OPEN RAIN, OR WITH WET WOOD. OBVIOUSLY ONLY NITWITS WOULD NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A NATURAL SHELTER WHEN BUILDING FIRE. THAT'S PART OF UNDERSTANDING YOUR FIRE WHICH I GUESS SOME FOLKS HERE DON'T KNOW YET.Please Mr. EXPERT, go build your debris hut and leave the rest of us in peace.

Your an idiot you say fire is the most important when it simply isnt finding shelter from the elements is wether it is a rock cave tent or whatever and heads up buddy common sense is what survival is all about you have to keep a fire going not good if you might be 2 exsausted to make a shelter after and sleeping in the cold after your fire goes out in 30 mins is not good!

1. Read all the comments, before you start re-defining what was meant by "shelter" as originally used. Cheeze, I never built my survival fires anywhere but a naturally sheltered place to begin with. COMMON SENSE and PLANNING.2. I never said you can't put your hat or poncho on, or that you didn't need to try and dry off! CS +P/Yeh,yeh.I've caught heat for using "camping" as a generic term before. Practicing Survival training and bushcraft are just subsets of "camping" as I practice it. |
