yes Szell tried to expose Barenboim when he taught him and demanded he conduct the 5th and Barenboim made a hash of it. Check out Barenboim's 5th recording however. Szell came around later and invited him to conduct the Cleveland.

have you ever tried to conduct it???!!! It's the most difficult piece to conduct in whole literature of orchestral music.
