technically there were a shitload of "ave maria"s written back at that time when the church played a huge role in music. but the Bach/Gounod and the Schubert ones are the only ones that survived.I personally prefer the schubert one

It's actually by Charles Gounod that wrote the version over Bach. The Schubert version isn't really the Hail Mary-although "Ave Maria" are the first words sung--it's a prayer for "The Lady of the Lake" which was originally called "Ellens dritter Gesang". |
