He wasn't a Pirate Lord. The Lords didn't use actual pieces of eight; he was just a kid, "guilty of associating with those convicted of piracy."

yep. as gibbs metioned, they originally proposed to use pieces of eight, but the pirates were "skint broke" when they met

Fiddler's Green is basically a pirates' paradise on Earth. The third verse is the one that serves to summon the Bretheren Court. It refers to a bell raised from its watery grave, urging the Lords to sail home (Shipwreck Cove).Basically, the song as a whole tells the story of Calypso's capture, Davy Jones' punishment, and summons the Bretheren Court to meet for a matter of great importance: in this case, a great battle for freedom.

According to Wikipedia, the first verse is refering to the capture of Calypso in her human form by Davy Jones and the original Bretheren Court so they could rule the seas as their own; you got that right. The second verse refers to men who are living and dead (Pirates), and some who sail on the sea (The Pirate Lords), as well as Keys to the Cage (The relics that will free Calypso) and A Devil To Pay (Davy Jones' punishment for not fulfilling his duty).

None of the Pirate Lords used an actual piece of eight, because the original Bretheren Court had none; and the song is supposed to resonate through ALL actual pieces of eight, not just the Pirate Lord relics. |
