Apparently Van Dyke Parks always spoke in that poetic language of his, and it used to infuriate Mike Love, who could never understand what he meant.

Wow- this reminds me of 17th or 56th street at Newport Beach when a big South from New Zealand hits. Really, really special; happens only once every couple of years and the once in a decade swell is talked about over campfires everywhere. Beach Boys go on for ever and this one is killer--so, too is Warmth of the Sun.

Great song. I've always loved the Beach Boys, and how do you not love Brian Wilson? The man is pure genius.

To williamblackfeather - I know that feeling, brother. But the import of this song is more than any one of us lay claim to. Most people who enjoy the Beach Boys don't realize that Brian Wilson, in a very brief span of time, captured, compressed, and consummated everything American music was, or has been, capable of producing. He went his own way. He was the Mozart of 20th-century America. We haven't yet seen another like him.

I was in my 914, top down, between Ventura and Carpeteria. The fog was rolling in, and I heard this song.It was the voice of Jesus, the voice of perfection. Thank God I realized the moment. I cried a bit about how perfect the moment was.Moments later I realized.....it was over. The perfect moment ever was over. Thank you for letting me be there at the perfect moment on earth.

I've been researching the Beach Boys for the last week and I must say now that I know their history, Brian Wilson is definitely an inspiration to me. It's too bad he gave in to drugs, but I guess that's part of what makes him so valued in a way.

I always like what Roger Daltry once said: "If you're writing music that has never been heard before, it seems only natural you would want lyrics that had never been heared before too."

to you... whatever he was smoking i think you should try it once or twice... just so you know what everyone else is so stunned and amazed at! cheers!

I think the real question here is: What the hell was Van Dyke Parks smoking when he wrote them? They are so wierd...this is no doubt a beautiful song adn one of my favs but the lyrics at points make no sense at all to me.

You know, until a year ago I really thought Brain sang this entire version. Carl legit sounds like Bri...and not just because they're bros either! And I love this version actually better than the Smile version...crazy...
