With the Pride of Bilbao incident that sank Yacht Ouzo and killed all on board, fresh in our minds, we couldn't believe it when this yacht decided to sail right across the ferry's bows as we left Bilbao's harbour. Yachtsman should seriously consider their actions as this ferry could never have stopped in time. It was a very close call.

Gaah. Cone. Been too long since I crewed a yacht, of any sort!

Correction: that would strictly be one ball. Though they're clearly incapable of maneuvering properly so the point stands...

Right. I'm willing to bet those guys were motoring, speed they were doing with no genny out. They should have put two black balls up, really. Not that anyone really does that outside the yachtmaster exam, which this idiot clearly hasn't taken.Seen enough silly mistakes to know that RYA day skipper is no substitute for experience when IRPCS is concerned. Some harbours in the Med you'll hear those five blasts often and just -know- it's some prat in a Beneteau running foul of the local ferry. :)

NOT over a vessel which is limited in its ability to manouvre.Do you have ANY experience?Your basic PB level 1/2 will tell you that what is a huge open sea for you could be a narrow channel for a ship!We had this on Monday 9th June when we were coming back in to Portsmouth. 5 short sharp blasts on the fog horn and he was out of the way. The yachty was pulled by the police patrol boat. They didn't look best pleased!!

GD your correct. The PB had the right of way over the sailboat. To many sailboater think they have the right of way over any boat but that just not so. Also if they have their engine in gear and are motoring (also called motor sailing) are treated like any other motor boat a cording to the rules.

Maybe he didn't start the video in time to get the recording of the sound so he put it in after wards. P of B im sure sounded the horn long before the vessel came close.

No, It's not very difficult to determine course and speed if you KNOW HOW. Firing flares in a non-distress situation would probably result with the same consequences in any harbour. Ignorance is not bliss on the seas.

WRONG. Local rules in the Solent - where this happened - is that all vessels must keep 1000m clear of commercial vessels. Also general rules state that all vessels, including sail boats, keep clear of vessels restricted in their ability to maneuver - which the Pride obviously is within the Solent.

I'm not saying the ship didn't sound its horn 5 times, but the horn sound on this vid is not recorded from this ship, but overlayed onto the vid.

The Pride of Bilbao blow her horn 5 times to warn the yacht in front of her,Rule 34d (the vessel in doubt shall immediately indicate such doubt by giving at least five short and rapid blasts on the whistle) this what she did
