I like all of the Klemperer performances I have heard. When we see him at this point in his life, with health problems that left him partially paralized, it is hard to realize what a firebrand and controversial figure he was when younger. His tempi tended to be much faster as well.

Yes, I have to be more flexible with my outlook. I'm a bit old fashioned I'm afraid. I just like Klemperers interpretation of the Eroica. it's a very grand symphony and it should be approached in a grand manor. I love this conductor and the marvellous sound from the NPO...

I agree that this movement should be played slowly, and this performance of this movement is among the slowest I've ever heard. But Klemperer is able to hold it together. Conductors such as Gardiner and Harnoncourt, (using "original instruments", smaller orchestras, etc.) tend to prefer much faster tempi. The music is great enough to be able to provide a satisfying experience through a wide range of interpretations.
