Comparing music like that to American idol IS a joke. They're not making music anymore coz the artist thought he need to express that but coz some producer thinks it's what we want to hear. So now all music is about getting laid and not about deeper stuff that really moves people. Ugly can be beautiful too, sadness is part of life and there's plenty of pain to go around. Johnny Cash says it all in every note he sings.

You know, listening to Johnny's voice in this song really drives home the fact that a great singer's voice isn't always 'beautiful" (say, by American Idol standards), but powerfully relevant to the song being sung. That's the magic of the Cashes and Dylans of this world. You just believe Johnny's message in this song.

I'll never forget when I first heard this song. I was in awe, Johnny got even more powerful with age.
