Truth be told, there are few scences of grapic violence in this movie, or at least on screen violence. The fact that he can take only a few scenes, and through directing skill, make those scenes translate over the entire movie. And there were very violent movies made in the 50's 60's and 70's. the special effects just weren't quite good enough to really make it feel real.
