The last one could have started fishing for things again, if he got something heavy, he could have moved backward nearer to the middle to balance that out. This way he could have accessed the box again, if it once is so important that sacrificing other's lives wasn't a problem. But good he didn't seem to get that idea, otherwise it would spoil the lesson he had to learn.
